    Information for parents on preventing infections caused by Pseudomonas
    Following the recent outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at the neonatal intensive care unit in the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital (RJMH), the Northern Ireland Health Minister has made a detailed statement to the Assembly on the course of the outbreak and the discovery of Pseudomonas bacteria in a number of taps in the intensive care area of the neonatal unit in the RJMH. The Public Health Agency (PHA) site has an information sheet available for parents on preventing infections caused by Pseudomonas. The PHA has played a key role in the provision of additional guidance on actions to be taken in neonatal units...
     
    Control options for norovirus in oysters
    The European Food Safety Authority’s Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ Panel) concludes in its risk assessment that the most effective public health measures to protect consumers from exposure to norovirus in oysters are to produce oysters in areas which are not contaminated or to prevent contamination of mollusc production areas. Bivalve molluscs, such as oysters and scallops, are a well documented source of infection as they can accumulate and concentrate virus particles. Oysters contaminated with norovirus pose a particular risk to human health as they are often consumed raw...
     
    Influenza activity is slowly increasing
    The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reports that influenza activity is slowly increasing in countries scattered across Europe and is currently dominated by A(H3N2) viruses. A(H1N1) is also important in some of the severe cases. This is reported in the latest edition of the Weekly influenza surveillance report (WISO) for week 3 (16-22 Jan 2012)...
     
    Advice for pregnant women to avoid close contact with animals giving birth
    Pregnant women should avoid close contact with animals that are giving birth, the Government has advised. The Department of Health, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Health and Safety Executive have issued annual advice for a number of years that pregnant women who come into close contact with sheep during lambing may risk their own health, and that of their unborn child, from infections that can occur in some ewes. Although the number of human pregnancies affected by contact with an infected animal is extremely small, it is important that pregnant women are aware of the potential risks and take appropriate precautions...
